Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the Tongarewa International Scholarships, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • International students paying full international fees
  • Entering their first year of an undergraduate degree or commencing a postgraduate degree program at Victoria University of Wellington

Applicants are ineligible if they have:

  • Completed secondary education at a New Zealand school
  • Completed the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) or Foundation Studies Programme
  • Participated in the Study Abroad or Twinning programs from overseas partner universities
  • Previously completed the second year of study in the same degree program at Victoria University of Wellington

Application Process

Applicants must submit a completed online application by 4:30 pm on the closing date, along with all required supporting documentation, including references. The application typically opens one month before the closing date. For the Trimester 2, 2024 intake, the deadline is May 1, 2024, and for the Trimester 3, 2024 intake, the deadline is August 1, 2024.

Scholarship-specific documentation includes:

  • A personal statement (up to 500 words) detailing reasons for studying at Victoria University of Wellington, academic aspirations, merits for the scholarship, leadership roles, and involvement in school or community activities
  • Full transcripts and relevant documentation for the chosen qualification
  • An offer of place from Victoria University of Wellington (conditional or unconditional)

Selection Process

A panel comprising Wellington University International staff members will oversee the selection process.

Additional Information

  • The Tongarewa International Scholarships cover partial tuition fees and are credited after the final withdrawal date for the trimester courses.
  • Recipients must be fully enrolled in a full-year program within the scholarship criteria and tenure to receive payment.
  • The Scholarship cannot be deferred and may be held alongside other awards.
  • Recipients are expected to represent Victoria University of Wellington as ambassadors and participate in relevant events or marketing activities upon request.

  • Recipients must maintain satisfactory progress and inform the Scholarships Office of any withdrawal intentions.
